What is Peridot? The Green Geology

Peridot is the gem-quality variety of olivine, a magnesium-iron silicate mineral with the formula (Mg,Fe)₂SiO₄. Most colored gems get their color from trace impurities, but peridot’s green color is an inherent property of the mineral itself. It is caused by iron (Fe²⁺), a basic building block of its chemical structure, not a contaminant. This is why peridot is classified as an idiochromatic gemstone: take away the iron, and there is no mineral, not just a colorless stone.

The shade of green (pale yellowish-green, deep olive, vivid apple-green) depends on the ratio of iron to magnesium in each individual crystal. Higher iron concentration equals a deeper, more saturated green. This iron-based chemistry is the direct reason for the characteristic golden-to-warm undertone that sets peridot apart from chrome-green stones like emerald or tsavorite.

Core Mineralogical Specifications:

Mineral: Olivine (Mg,Fe)₂SiO₄

Color Agent: Idiochromatic (Intrinsic) Iron (Fe²⁺)

Color Range: Pale yellow-green → Golden-green → Apple-green → Olive-green

Crystal System: Orthorhombic

Mohs Hardness: 6.5 – 7

Specific Gravity: 3.27 – 3.37

Refractive Index: 1.654 – 1.690

Birefringence: 0.036 (quite high – produces a doubling effect seen under magnification)

Treatment: Usually none; natural color (no heat treatment required or performed)

Origins Stocked: Sapat Gali / Kohistan (Pakistan), Mansehra (Pakistan), Egypt (Zabargad Island), Myanmar

Why Pakistani Peridot is Important to the World

At the international level, Pakistan is known to be one of the best sources of large, high-clarity peridot in the world, specifically the Sapat Gali deposit in the Kohistan district of KPK. The deposit is located at high altitude in the Himalayan belt, where the dunite and harzburgite rocks have produced extremely well-formed crystals of gem-quality olivine, often sizes of 10 carats and above with eye-clean transparency.

The difference of Kohistan material from other sources is:

Color: Pakistani peridot is generally bright apple-green to golden-green, more saturated and warmer than Chinese material, which tends to be paler yellow-green. Fine Sapat Gali stone in direct sunlight displays a pure, internally lit green that is unmatched at this price point and cannot be consistently replicated from any other source.

Size: Kohistan produces much larger facetable crystals than most deposits around the world, which is a commercial advantage for both jewelry designers and collectors looking for statement pieces.

Clarity: Kohistan material can be perfectly eye-clean without any treatment – a quality that makes Pakistani peridot disproportionately competitive at mid-to-premium price points versus heavily included material from other global sources.

Emerald vs. Peridot: An Important Difference for Buyers

The reference to peridot as a “cheap emerald substitute” requires a substantial correction, because the two stones have entirely different mineralogy, appearance, and astrology in ways that matter to a serious buyer.

Visually: Emerald is a beryl with a pure chromium-driven green that carries a cool tone. Peridot is an olivine, colored a warm yellow-green by intrinsic iron. The two are immediately distinguishable side-by-side—the signature of peridot is its warmth and slight golden undertone; it does not mimic the deeper cool green of a fine emerald.

Mineralogically: Totally different families of minerals (beryl vs. olivine). Different hardness (7.5–8 versus 6.5–7), different specific gravity, and different crystal structures.

Astrologically: In the Vedic tradition, Emerald is Mercury’s (Budh) primary stone. In some South Asian astrological traditions, peridot is used as an upratna (secondary or substitute stone) for Mercury. However, in other astrological schools, it is more properly classed as a stone of Venus or the Sun. Always consult a qualified astrologer before buying any gemstone for astrological purposes.

Peridot is more than capable of holding its own and doesn’t need to be marketed simply as an alternative to another stone to validate its worth.

Pricing: Standard Grade vs. Kohistan

Standard Grade – Olive / Yellow-Green (PKR 1,500–4,000/ct): Smaller stones, moderate clarity, olive or light yellow-green tone. Ideal for classic jewelry settings and astrological use.

Premium Grade — Apple Green / Kohistan Eye-Clean (PKR 5,000–18,000/ct): Bright apple-green to golden-green, eye-clean, well-cut. The standard for collector & jewelry grade Pakistani peridot.

Large Stone Premium (5ct+): Eye-clean Pakistani peridot over 5 carats carries a large additional premium regardless of the per-carat base pricing – clean size rarity is a real factor at this deposit.

Astrological & Cultural Importance (Zabarjad — زبرجد)

Peridot has one of the longest documented histories of any gem. It was mined for over 3,500 years by the ancient Egyptians from Zabargad Island in the Red Sea and appears in Egyptian royal jewelry and in historical texts as “the gem of the sun.” Green stones have been worn in rings in the Islamic scholarly tradition for centuries, and the Arabic name Zabarjad (زبرجد) appears frequently in classical texts regarding the virtues of gemstones.

It is also used as a secondary stone in South Asian astrological practice, where it is associated with Mercury (Budh) by some practitioners and with Venus (Zuhra) by others. Its affordability, natural green color, and documented historical use make it a practical choice for the astrological buyer who wants a real natural stone with genuine provenance.

DISCLAIMER: All astrological and metaphysical properties described above are based on traditional Vedic, Islamic, and South Asian cultural practices. They are not scientifically proven and are not meant to replace professional medical, financial, or astrological advice. Before you buy any gemstone for astrological purposes, seek advice with a qualified astrologer.

A Note on Care: Hardness Is Important Here

Peridot is less durable than ruby, sapphire, and emerald at 6.5-7 Mohs. It is excellent for pendants, earrings, and rings for occasional wear. Daily wear rings should ideally have a protective setting (like a bezel or halo, rather than exposed prongs) to protect against chipping of the edges. Do not use ultrasonic cleaners at all; the relatively high birefringence of peridot and its sensitivity to thermal shock make ultrasonic vibration a real fracture risk. Clean only with mild soap and a soft cloth. Store separately from hard stones to prevent surface scratching.
